UEFA Super Cup — Tips and bets

This Thursday in Budapest, two best teams in Europe will fight: Bayern - the European champions and Sevilla - the winners of the Europa League. Bayern is heading into the game following a major 8-0 win over Schalke in the first leg of the Bundesliga. Meanwhile, Sevilla's opening match in La Liga has been postponed. The German team have won each of their last 22 matches and have an unbeaten streak of 31 matches. Bayern last lost back in December 2019 when they were beaten 2-1 by Borussia Monchengladbach. Bayern have scored three or more goals in seven of their last 10 matches.

Sevilla have not played in competition since beating Inter in August, but they did have a friendly against Levante. The Spaniards have scored in each of their last six matches. In their last 32 matches, Sevilla have not scored in just three matches. One of the most successful teams in the Europa League, Sevilla will play in the Super Cup for the sixth time. Of their previous five, they managed to win only one - beating Barcelona 3-0 in 2006. It will be the second time they will face a non-Spanish team. Given the high performance of both teams, I think there will be a lot of goals, but Bayern will win.

📍 The Spaniards have seen at least three goals in four of their five matches in this competition. Their previous two were incredible clashes, as they lost 3-2 to Real Madrid and 5-4 against Barcelona, both in extra time.

📍 Those 2-2 and 4-4 draws within the 90 minutes were entertaining in themselves, while we expect a repeat of that against a Bayern side who scored eight against Schalke on Friday night. That has us backing over 3.5 goals as our first prediction.

Bayern Munich approach this clash in imense form, having won 22 consecutive matches. They look far too strong for Sevilla here. Bayern have put eight goals past both Schalke and Barcelona in their last four games, so we expect them to comfortably win this clash.

As a result, we’re going with a 3-1 correct score prediction given the Bavarians’ scoring form and Sevilla’s record of conceding goals in the Super Cup.

Bayern Munchen will be aiming to lift yet another prestigious trophy when they take on Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup at Puskas Arena. The mighty Bavarians did well to beat PSG in the Champions League final last term, and they are seen as hot favourites to win Thursday’s showdown as well. Thiago Alcantara is no longer part of the squad as he joined Liverpool, but summer signing Leroy Sane is likely to prove a handful for the opposition defenders.

Kingsley Koman, who was tested positive for coronavirus, is unlikely to feature against Sevilla. Los Sevillanos, on the other hand, head into the match with Ever Banega and Sergio Reguilon, who left the club in the summer transfer window. Considering that Bayern Munchen crushed Schalke 8-0 in their Bundesliga opener, we do not believe that Sevilla, who have yet to start the new La Liga campaign, are capable of spoiling FCB’s party in Bucharest.

One man to watch here is Serge Gnabry, who has scored six times in his last four matches for Bayern. The winger has extra competition for a spot in the starting line up but his excellent displays have ensured he’s still first choice. Given the threat he carries from out wide, we think that Gnabry is well priced to score any time against Sevilla.

⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️ Bayern’s last appearance in this competition came back in 2013, when their 2-2 draw with Chelsea was settled on penalties. Their only previous appearance this century saw them lose 3-2 to Liverpool. They should fit in well with Sevilla, who have a history of high scoring Super Cup clashes!

Sevilla stormed to yet another Europa League success, but they’ve failed to transfer that across to the Champions League. They’ve also failed to impress against the Champions League holders, finishing as runners-up in their last four UEFA Super Cup finals. Will Bayern add to that dismal run?
