Do you remember, Las Palmas picked up an excellent result last Thursday as they held Barcelona to a draw to strengthen their survival prospects. They will still head to Vigo inside the relegation zone but suddenly there is hope, when there looked to be virtually none a few weeks back.
As for Celta Vigo, they are safely placed in mid-table but they will be very keen to push for 7th place and hopefully secure Europa League football next term. They’ve only won 1 of their last 5 league games but they’ve been pretty good at home of late, which suggests they are capable of coming out on top here against struggling opposition.
Celta have lost just 1 of their last 9 matches at Balaidos in all competitions. That includes games against the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid so they do seem to have turned a corner in terms of their home performances, which weren’t great at the back end of last season and early on this. They’ve only failed to score in 15% of their league games this term and against a Las Palmas side that doesn’t score many goals, they may not need more than one here.
Their strike pairing of Iago Aspas and Maxi Gomez has been the best in the division besides Luis Suarez and Leo Messi at Barcelona. The duo both rank in the top seven for goals scored in La Liga this term and backing Maxi Gomez to score anytime looks good here, given the Uruguayan has scored in all of his last four home appearances for Celta Vigo.
Las Palmas have improved under Paco Jemez but this is still a side that has only collected 0.46 points per game away from home on average this season. Only Malaga have a worse away record than them and this will be a difficult game to have, particularly so soon after such a big effort against Barcelona. Their goalscorer in that match, Jonathan Calleri, is suspended here and with playmaker Jonathan Viera having recently left the club, you have to wonder how they are going to cause Celta problems.
Las Palmas are in the midst of a dire run, where they’ve scored in only 2 of their last 16 away matches in La Liga. This is unlikely to be the kind of game where they are going to be able to grind out a 0-0, given their opponent’s attacking firepower and backing Celta to Win to Nil looks to offer value.
