Roma looked like they had done enough to put themselves in a comfortable position for this second leg tie when these two sides met back in Ukraine. Cengiz Under put the visiting Italians in front just before half time, but Shakhtar Donetsk came out fighting in the second half and scored two goals without reply to win the game 2-1. These two goals, from Facundo Ferreyra and Fred, have made this tie very interesting indeed.
Roma followed that with a disappointing 2-0 loss at home to AC Milan in Serie A, leaving them lagging behind Napoli and Juventus at the top of Serie A in a massive way. However, a shock 4-2 win away to Napoli and a 3-0 win over Torino on Friday have put them back on track, and they will be relatively confident of turning this deficit around on Tuesday.
The hosts have had their difficulties this season, but at home in the Champions League they have been excellent. They were widely considered underdogs for qualification in a group that included both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, but they picked up a 3-0 win at home to Chelsea and a draw against Atletico Madrid, results which saw them top the group with 11 points.
