Marseille have found their season taking a turn for the worse recently, but they will be hoping to remedy that when they face Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, with the Europa League being their only vaguely realistic chance of silverware this season.
The weekend saw them draw against Nantes, to make it four games without a win. Two of the previous three did come away from home to PSG though, both of which ended 3-0 to the Ligue 1 leaders to put Marseille out of the Coupe de France and leave them some 18 points adrift of the top of the Ligue 1 table.
Prior to that Les Olympiens were in excellent form, winning ten of their previous 12 and losing none. This included their 3-0 win over Sporting Braga in the last round of the Europa League, a first leg result that meant the 1-0 defeat they suffered in Portugal was forgiveable.
Athletic Bilbao aren’t in great form either. In fact, they’re having a torrid season domestically, sitting 15th in La Liga and getting eliminated from the Copa del Rey all the way back in November against 3rd tier Formentera.
It hasn’t any better recently either. They lost at Sevilla on Saturday to make it two wins, six draws, and four defeats in their last 12 matches in all competitions. Three of these defeats have come in the last five matches, including a 2-1 loss at home to Spartak Moscow.
The signs aren’t looking promising for Bilbao. The Spanish club have lost three of their last four away days and are facing a Marseille side who are unbeaten since September at the Orange Velodrome. The hosts have won 12 and drawn three of their 15 home matches since then, and have kept a clean sheet in ten of these matches. This makes a Marseille Win look the best option here, but I also backing a Marseille Win and Under 2.5 Goals alongside our 2-0 correct score predictions.
