Things continued to get worse for Burnley on Boxing Day as they were the unfortunate recipients of an Everton response. The Toffees had been thrashed at home by Spurs before Christmas, and they came into their Boxing Day trip to Turf Moor with their hackles raised and ready for action. They thrashed The Clarets 5-1 to continue Burnley’s miserable Christmas.
Sean Dyche’s men have now lost 3 matches on the bounce, but more worrying is the fact that they have won just 1 of their last 12 Premier League games. 9 of these outings have ended in defeat, and even at home they have lost 4 of their last 5.
West Ham looked to be heading for another frustrating season when they started this campaign with 4 straight defeats, but their big summer spending and the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini seems to be paying off now.
The Hammers beat Southampton 2-1 on Thursday, bouncing back from a disappointing home loss to Watford to make it 5 wins from their last 6 league games. This run has been enough to push them into the top half of the table, which is quite extraordinary considering their dismal start to the Premier League campaign.
West Ham actually tend to do better away from home than in front of their own fans. They have won 3 in a row on the road and haven’t lost in the league since October. Not only that, but they have also won 5 of their last 7 meetings with Burnley.
Five wins in the last six matches have pulled West Ham United to the top half of the log and the team which had a woeful start to the Premier League campaign this season can dare dream again. West Ham’s run in the recent times was only checked by an unforeseen home loss to Watford but they recovered immediately with a win over Southampton, largely orchestrated by striker Felipe Anderson who has taken up the mantle well from the injured Javier Hernandez. The Brazilian has now scored eight goals and emerged as a very key player for the side. He will be on show again in this clash. In five of the last six matches, West Ham have scored two goals or more; in the only match they have not scored, they have lost. They will be confident enough to take on a Burnley side that has shipped in nine goals in the last three matches and has lost six of their last seven matches. Away from home, West Ham have not lost any of the last five, picking 11 points off a possible 15 while Burnley have one win and four losses in the five home matches. West Ham have six wins in the last eight matches against Burnley and have lost just once in the process. The two sides have met 63 times in history; West Ham have managed 28 wins and Burnley 19.
