The second match of Friday night’s double-header in La Liga sees Leganes travel to Barcelona to take on an Espanyol side that is desperately in need of a victory or at the very least a point. Despite a fine start to the season, it was a miserable end to 2018 for Rubi’s men, who are without a league point since 5th November against Athletic. They still had a 100% home record at that point but it has been 6 straight league defeats since then for Espanyol. They did put in an improved display to only lose 1-0 against Atletico Madrid in the capital in their final game of 2018 but prior to that, they had really lost their way defensively with goals going in against them at regular intervals. As for Leganes, their season has taken almost completely the opposite pattern. They started slowly and looked like firm relegation candidates in the early days under Mauricio Pellegrino. However slowly but surely, he has instilled some real discipline into this side and results have picked up. He has placed plenty of faith in Guido Carrillo, a striker who misfired for him at Southampton last term but has been a key figure for Leganes this season. Right now, you couldn’t seriously back Espanyol to win at odds on, which they are with some bookies for this one. They really fell apart at the back end of 2018 and even when they were going well, they were largely reliant on Borja Iglesias for goals. He has made an impact in his first real top flight season but there is still a shortage of creativity in this Espanyol side and even their trusty defence has been badly out of sorts of late. Overall, backing Leganes Double Chance looks good here with the Madrid side playing with real confidence and belief right now.
