It’s a weird time to be an Aberdeen fan at the moment. The Dons have played a trio of games in just under a week, and it has been a bittersweet few days for the club.
Following their disappointing loss to Celtic in the Betfred League Cup final at the start of the month, which the Dons lost 1-0 following a goal from Ryan Christie on the brink of half-time, Aberdeen then had to travel back to Glasgow as they played Rangers at Ibrox. Derek McInnes’ men bounced back wonderfully from their previous defeat, as they handed Rangers yet another loss after Scott McKenna’s 7th minute strike was the only goal of the game.
However, Saturday’s home fixture saw the Dons host a high-flying St Johnstone, who were above Aberdeen in the league going into the game. A win for the hosts would have seen them overtake the Saints, but Tommy Wright continued to impress everyone in the country as his side scored twice in the space of 3 minutes to seal the win.
Aberdeen face yet another important fixture in the league. As things stand, the Dons are currently in 7th place and on 24 points, but they are a single point behind Livingston, so a win for McInnes would see them jump back into the top half of the Premiership table.
Despite having a few irregular and inconsistent weeks in the Premiership, Livingston now seem to have found some momentum, albeit still dropping points along the way. After their impressive unbeaten run, which new manager Gary Holt managed to extend to 7 games- including wins over Hibs & Rangers-, Livi struggled to win points over the next four games, as they only gained one in those fixtures, even if it was an impressive draw against Celtic.
Dolly Menga was sorely missed in Livingston’s away trip to Rangers, which they lost 3-0, and the striker’s absence proved to be the key factor in their defeat. Holt’s men would get back to their winning ways at the start of the month as they beat Motherwell 2-0 at home, but Kilmarnock handed them yet another defeat during the game last Wednesday, a win that propelled Killie to the top of the table.
However, second-bottom St Mirren would get on the wrong side of Livingston, as their 35th minute goal would be cancelled out throughout the second half, as Holt’s side equalised in the 50th minute, before then going on to bag another two goals in the 64th and 88th minute marks.
The teams are roughly level points, and they are only one place apart in the league table. However, Aberdeen have played a game less than their opponents, due to both their semi-final and final of the Betfred League Cup. Livingston’s away record this season has been dire, as the West Lothian club have only won once, which was against St Mirren in their first away game of the season. In contrast, Aberdeen have only lost twice at home this season, and we expect the Dons to continue to win on their turf, despite losing at Pittodrie to St Johnstone on Saturday. We’re backing Aberdeen to score over 2.5 goals.
