Lyon had been plodding along rather quietly before the PSG game with wins over Amiens (1-0, 2-0) and Saint-Étienne (2-1) being nothing out of the ordinary but they really managed to kick it up a gear against a Neymar-less Paris side (2-1). Lyon did fantastically to bounce back from 1-0 down and they even ended up edging them in terms of shots as they truly frazzled the champions at the Groupama.
This will fill the sails of Lyon as some players have been slightly under performing in recent weeks such as Leo Dubois, Bertrand Traore and Memphis Depay, who is goalless since November. The defence hasn’t really improved as has become a theme of Lyon in the last twelve months but with the goals beginning to slowly come at a more consistent rate, Lyon should be aiming for 2nd spot, even top if PSG continue to falter. But that is all in the future, as the Lyonnais first have to concentrate on this Coupe de France round of 16 match. They have had pretty easy run ins so far in the competition, Amiens and fifth-tier Bourges Foot being swept aside but Guingamp should prove much stiffer competition here.
Lyon are currently high on life and will be raring to go ahead of this match but Guingamp have also had things to cheer about after qualifying for the Coupe de la Ligue final. Nevertheless, Lyon have shown in recent weeks that they can match the big sides stride for stride but also get gritty against the smaller teams scrapping for points. The fact that this is a cup game shouldn’t change much but with Guingamp bottom of Ligue 1, they probably won’t mind having one less competition to worry about.
