Rep. Ireland started their World Cup Qualifying (WCQ) campaign with a 3-2 loss to Serbia despite netting the first and the last goals of the match. In turn, the Irish are now winless in 12 competitive matches (D7, L5 – 90 mins), although they can take encouragement from finding the net for the first time after seven barren outings (including friendlies) in a row!
Though they are comfortable pre-match favourites, Ireland are winless here in five competitive matches, failing to score in the last three, with each of those five producing a goalless HT. Yet, Ireland have opened the scoring before the break in each of their previous three home competitive wins, all against nations currently ranked 89th or worse by FIFA.
Luxembourg (FIFA rank: #98) enter this WCQ group after only one loss in their previous four competitive matches, although against similarly ranked nations in the UEFA Nations League (W2, D1, L1). However, they have lost six (D3) of their last nine away matches across the last two qualification campaigns for major tournaments, conceding 3+ goals in five.
