Manchester City bid to make it at least three English teams in the last eight of the Champions League. They didn't have it all their own way in Germany when playing the first leg of this last 16 tie. Despite taking an early lead, they went 2-1 down after some contoversial decisions. Two late goals gave them a 3-2 win and it should be plain sailing for them in this second leg. City won 3-1 against Watford on Saturday to stay top of the English Premier League with Raheem Sterling scoring a hat-trick. They have won their last nine games (one via a penalty shoot-out) and 17 of the last 18. At home, they have won every one of their last 19 games with the only loss being against Crystal Palace in December. They did lose to Lyon in their opening Champions League home match this season but won their next two scoring eight goals.
Schalke 04 have a massive task on their hands if they want to reach the last eight. While they have scored under two goals in this tie they have no chance of progressing due to those three away goals that City have. Schalke are only two places and four points above the Bundesliga relegation zone and will likely need to win the German Cup to get European football next season. Friday saw them lose 4-2 at Werder Bremen and that was their fourth straight loss with 14 goals conceded. They have gone six games without a win and over 90 minutes have only won one of their last 13 away games. City can get the win in this game and be leading at both half and full time.
