Ghana lost out in the semis and the third-place playoff in 2017. That was their latest blow in their chase to win this competition for the first time since 1982. They are hunting for their fifth African title, but they’ve been falling short regularly since hosting the competition in 2008. They made a great start with two wins in their opening two games, while they played out a 0-0 draw in their final clash with France. That draw was quite a shift from their opening games – which saw 11 goals between them. That’s because a point guaranteed both Romania and France a semi-final spot, so neither side wanted to take any risks in that clash.
Romania are likely to up their game in this semi-final, as they look to get back to their early attacking ways. They won their opening two clashes by scoring four goals in each. They put four past England in just 14 minutes in their second game, so they should be out to take the game to Germany in Thursday’s first semi-final clash. That comes after they scored 13 goals in the five matches before the tournament began, so this Romania side are obviously packing a punch going forward. However, you can say the same about reigning champions Germany.
The Germans hit 10 goals of their own in the group stage, so we can expect a high scoring clash on Thursday in Bologna. They have seen both teams score in their last six games ahead of this encounter with Romania, so we expect goals between two sides who clearly have little trouble creating chances for themselves. We anticipate an open game between these two, so we’re going with both teams to score as our main tip for this semi. We’re also backing Germany to edge the tie with a 2-1 victory.

The Danes and Irish have become well acquainted over recent years, while they’re set for another meeting on Friday. The two met in the playoffs for the 2018 World Cup, while they shared another two clashes in the Nations League. Now the Irish head to Copenhagen to face Denmark for the fifth time in 20 months. However, this time they’re led by Mick McCarthy, after he replaced Martin O’Neill late last year. Can he inspire the Irish to a result in this clash with Denmark to keep their Euro 2020 hopes on track?
Denmark made it to the World Cup off the back of that win over the Irish, while they went on to make the last 16. They’re on course for another major championship, having won their UEFA Nations League group. That has put the Danes into a playoff for the Euros, regardless of what happens in their qualifying group. It seems to be a three-way fight for the top two here, with Denmark and the Irish joined by Nations League Finalists Switzerland.
The Irish head here as the underdogs, despite leading the way early on. While Switzerland and Denmark kicked off with a 3-3 draw, the Irish were able to win both of their opening games to move top. However, this is their first real test following victories over Gibraltar and Georgia. Despite that, McCarthy can be pleased with how well his side defended – something which O’Neill failed to produce from the same squad in the final days of his reign.
While O’Neill has had his reputation as an international boss tarnished, his record against the Danes is nowhere near as bad as made out. While he made huge mistakes in the 5-1 defeat at home to them in the World Cup playoffs, that was one major error. In three of the four meetings between the two, the Republic of Ireland were able to come away with a clean sheet. One other achievement which carries through to today was their improved away displays.
O’Neill’s side were unbeaten on the road in World Cup qualifying, which included a 0-0 draw with Denmark. Improving their solidity on the road has boosted Ireland’s chances of qualifying, which is something which sets McCarthy up well here. Now the Irish meet a Denmark side who have drawn three on the bounce, failing to win either meeting with the Boys in Green last year. Ivory Coast are pushing to win this tournament, but they have a tricky last 16 meeting with Mali ahead if they can win this clash. We expect the Elephants to gain some revenge for their loss to Namibia, while they’ve been made heavy favourites to win their final group game. Their array of stars has to easily guide them through this match, while they should only get better moving forward in this tournament.
Ivory Coast went into this group with a brilliant forward line, but there were questions about their defensive ability. Having won 1-0 and lost 1-0 in their two games so far, their defence hasn’t seemed to be the problem. They aren’t quite clicking up front, but one of Nicolas Pepe, Wilfried Zaha, Max Gradel and Jean Michael Seri should be able to pick apart Namibia. After all, the minnows are in poor form at the back of late.
Namibia have conceded 20 goals in their eight matches at the Africa Cup of Nations. They’ve lost six of their eight matches at this competition, while they’ve scored only once in their last four AFCON outings. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast qualified with three clean sheets in their last four qualifying matches, while so far they’ve been a solid side at the back. Given Namibia’s inability to score, we see Ivory Coast breaking through and claiming a win to nil. We’re going with Ivory Coast to win and keep a clean sheet.
