Arsenal have scored at least twice in their last seven away games in the Premier League and I expect to see goals at St Mary’s with Unai Emery’s side coming out on top of an entertaining game. The Gunners have lost just two of their last 17 games against Southampton in all competitions and the hosts are currently on a barren run of 14 games. These are difficult and worrying times for the Saints and I can’t see them getting anything against an in-form Arsenal.
Ralph Hasenhuttl started his reign as Southampton manager with a defeat at Cardiff last weekend. I am sure Hasenhuttl realises that Cardiff's playing style is different to most other Premier League sides, but things are not going to get easier for him just because Arsenal will come and try to play at St Mary's. The Gunners left it late against Huddersfield last weekend but got another win in the end, and I am backing them to spoil Hasenhuttl's first home game. Looking at Southampton's squad, they will have to act in January if they want results to improve significantly. If they want to stay in this division, they will need to gamble. That could mean spending £50-60m but, after all the players they have sold in the past few years, Saints must have the cash. The question is, are they prepared to spend it?
New Southampton manager Ralph Hassenhuttl certainly has a job on his hands. The former RB Leipzig coach took charge of his first game at his new club last weekend as they paid a visit to fellow relegation battlers Cardiff, but despite the new hand at the tiller it was the same old Southampton in Wales.
They lost that game 1-0, following on from their 3-1 defeat at Spurs to make it 12 Premier League games without a win. That 2-0 win over Crystal Palace was their only league victory of the season, and with 9 defeats from their 16 games they find themselves down in 19th place and only ahead of Fulham on goal difference.
There doesn’t look to be much hope for them this weekend either, because they’re facing an Arsenal side who look reborn under Unai Emery this season. The Gunners lost their opening 2 league matches against Manchester City and Chelsea, but since then it’s been a blinding success.
Arsenal rounded off their Europa League group stage campaign with yet another win in midweek, and that 1-0 success over Qarabag extends their unbeaten run to an incredible 22 matches in all competitions. 14 of these have been in the Premier League, a record which has put them well in the running for a top 4 spot this season.
Currently, they lie just outside the top 4, trailing Chelsea on goal difference and behind North London rivals Tottenham by a 2 point margin. The Gunners may be rank outsiders for a title challenge this season, but it’s a massive step in the right direction for them.
The visitors have won 4 of their last 6 Premier League away games, and they’re facing a Saints side who are yet to win a home league game this season. In fact, Southampton have won just 1 of their last 18 Premier League matches at St Mary’s, and they have only won 2 of their last 17 Premier League meetings with Arsenal.
Southampton is in big trouble in the Premier League and takes the penultimate place in the standings. The team has not yet won a single home match and this is not likely to be the case against Arsenal, which is still on an extraordinary series of 21 games without defeat in all competitions. Unai Emery's men are gaining momentum and offered a benchmark match in the home win over Tottenham in the North London Derby. We rely on Gunners.
Soton might've changes managers, but nothing has changed. They look shocking at the back and don't have a prolific goalscorer. Arsenal are back in form, having won three of their last four in the league, and should be able to continue the good run here. Why such a high ratio? I hope Arsenal will not fail
